FINDING THE POSITIVES IN REMOTE LEARNING

One of the real positives with remote learning has been the opportunity for me to be able to catch up with kids during their whole class Google Meetings. I have asked staff to send invites to Steve, Robyn and myself as a way of keeping in touch and connecting with our students. After the initial shock of seeing their Principal and Deputy Principals suddenly appears in their meeting. It has been a great opportunity to hear firsthand about how our students are feeling, how their learning has progressed and what challenges they feel they are facing.

A common conversation theme during the meetings based on student feedback across our grades, was that I am very much in need of haircut. Jaxson in grade 3 told me that he really liked my mullet lol. With that in mind, I let my daughter Sophie go nuts on my hair bale last night and I have to say she did a half-decent job.

On a serious note, our kids are showing real stamina and resilience with their remote learning. There are very focused according to the teachers and producing high quality work. The teachers have done a great job setting out the work, and meeting online with our children to make important social connections and support children that may be experiencing difficulties or challenges with day-to-day tasks.

I am also very aware of the role that you, the parents play in relation to Offsite Remote Learning. You have all done an amazing job in what are some challenging and difficult times. You are all to be commended on your efforts.

If I could make one suggestion to all the parents working through remote learning on a daily basis. Allow children plenty of time be active outside whilst they are in remote offsite learning. The well-being and healthy mind space of all our children and parents is a key component of Offsite Remote Learning.

Parents please keep in touch with your children's teachers if you have any concerns relating to the learning taking place at home. Remember that there is no set time frame for Remote Learning to take place at home. It works best when it is based on your time schedule and your family’s needs. Every families is different and it is important to do what works best for you and your family dynamic.

If you have any great photos of kids participating in fun activities during Offsite Remote Learning, at home could you please send them to admin@stidrouin.catholic.edu.au and we can use them in our newsletter.

Stay well, stay safe and make sure you get to have some family time out in the sun this week.

STUDENTS ATTENDING ONSITE REMOTE LEARNING WITH COLD OR FLU LIKE SYMPTOMS

    Germs.jpg

If your child is displaying cold or flu like symptoms, please do not send them to Onsite Remote Learning. In the interest of everyone’s health and safety, if your child has cold or flu symptoms please keep them at home until their symptoms have cleared.

I have instructed all staff managing onsite remote learning to contact parents if their children have cold or flu like symptoms and they will need to be collected from school.

     DAILY GOOGLE MEETINGS FOR STUDENTS

    Google_Meet.jpg

Please find listed below the important protocols for all students to follow when participating in Remote Learning Google Meetings.

    • All students 3-6 are expected to participate in a daily Google Meeting with your teacher except when they are rostered onto working at school for Onsite Remote Learning.
    • If students are not attending or participating in Google Meetings, teachers will contact the parents to ensure that their children are present for these as important learning expectations are shared.
    • No students are to attend or invite themselves into other grades Google Meetings
    • Students are not to attend Google Meetings from their bed; they must be dressed appropriately and set up for their meeting in an appropriate space. Children are expected to be tuned in to the information being shared and not using these meetings as a social get together.
    • Teachers will have a daily catch up with vulnerable students who may be struggling with the learning provided. Teachers will check in with parents wherever possible.
    • Parents we want you to understand that it is ok to participate in off-site remote learning on your time frame. Remote Learning has to be suitable and adaptable to all the different family dynamics. We do not want parents stressing because the can not fit learning into a 9.00am-3.00pm time slot. You do what works best for you.
    • Please share any parent feedback with your child's teacher or with any of the schools leadership team on (03) 5623 7222. If you are having, any issues or concerns please us in the loop.
    • Please remember that we will do our very best to support every student in our care as well as support all our parents through these challenging times.

    PARISH NEWS

    STIRRING THE POSSUM

    Compassion.jfif.jpg

Afghanistan’s new masters have a well-earned image as women haters, of treating women brutally without compunction or compassion. They seem to regard half of humanity as subservient sub-humans to be viciously kept down.

Yet we see images of brave Afghan women with placards demanding fundamental justice of the Taliban. Such courage is unfathomable. They know their defiant bravery can’t end well but there is no safe or easy way to proclaim what they must. Courageous stirring like this is the only way to change society. It has ever been thus – people with the purpose and bravery to challenge injustice and absorb the consequences (think Eureka Stockaders or suffragettes), inspiring and paving the way for others through their suffering.

Jesus is the greatest stirrer of all. He hasn’t gone out of his way to challenge the authorities but simply pursued his mission of proclaiming the Good News of God’s love. Inevitably, the authorities wouldn’t like his message and his witness. Jesus was not naïve; he knew the odds of a violent end if he continued his activity and kept insisting on the irruption of God’s reign. It was impossible to live in solidarity with the poor and downtrodden, as he did, without suffering the reaction of the powerful. (Mark 8:27-35) (Pagola p332) Sooner or later it would lead to his death.

What are the thoughts of those young Afghan women, proclaiming their message, insisting on respect and dignity for women, their right to make their own decisions and to pursue employment and education? Surely, sooner rather than later, the crazies who have taken their country will violently suppress them; probably kill them.

We Christians see in them Jesus, who died bravely proclaiming the greatest message of all: God’s absolute, infinite, intimate love for us. Signing up with Jesus means turning away from our old easy life and seeking new life in the Father’s Kingdom. Proactively supporting our brave Afghan sisters might be a start.
